The key to dressing up a regular office outfit is to find your hero Indian piece. Something as simple as a bag in a traditional indie print. For instance I added an ikat print bag to a simple shift dress and instantly the outfit has some earthy accents. Similarly, you can create a mix of indie pieces you like and using your core pieces you can simply create interesting accents in an otherwise boring office outfit.

So if you haven't yet realised that skirts are your friend, I hope these pictures make you change your mind. I absolutely love wearing skirts no matter what the occasion, but the beach is especially a great place for them. The trick is to find fabrics that dry quickly. Polyesters are great, jerseys not so much. Also, if you've got an old skirt you don't quite like in terms of the fit, take a pair of scissors and cut out a slit (like I did) and voila, you've got a beach skirt. The idea is to give your feet freedom to battle the waves. Secondly, instead of wearing the same tshirt everytime, try going to the beach in your strappy camisoles. The idea is to make your everyday clothes double up as a weekend outfit piece.

But what if you don't own a fancy skirt and tshirts are all you have? I hear you girl, I've been there and guess what, you can definitely look good. Get yourself a long scarf (they're about 100-200 and are complete life savers) and try wrapping it around your old shorts as a sarong. Floaty fabrics work best because there' just something fabulous about your dress slighly fluttering as the sun sets. Oh yes, and this works just as great with a regular tshirt as it does with a top like mine. One extra tip, try knotting the tshirt to give yourself a bit of waist. It doesn't cost a thing and trust me, it'll make your curves pop!

If you ask me right now, what defines my personal style at the moment, its a split between my professional life that's all about power dressing without getting lost in the crowd and personal life which is completely bohemian. There's something about wearing what you want that calls to me. Over the last year, I've realised that I'm a gypsy at heart and this reflects in the way I dress. Seamless transition from suits to gypsy skirts is something that has become a part of my soul. Today's outfit is about just that. Dressing for my soul.



I saw this maxi dress on Vajor and I had an instant longing for it. Of course the price tag didn't quite let me take the plunge and that meant I waited and watched till it turned up on a shopping portal on resale. As soon as it did, (well okay, after slight haggling over the price) I had it and I've worn it quite a few times. It's the perfect material for beaches, evening sundowners, simple weekend dressing and pretty much everything you can possibly imagine doing on the weekends. I decided to let my love for bohemian elements shine through and decided to add hints of it in the look. Adding flash tattoos instead of stacked bangles was a last minute decision and this was my very first time trying them out (super late to the party I know). Will I try flash tattoos again? Definitely!








Anyway, if you're on the lookout for tips to dressing like a bohemian gypsy fashionista, here's the lowdown!

• The rule is, there are no rules! Yes, really, this is the first rule when it comes to bohemian dressing since its all about what makes your heart sing! 
• Flowy dresses and maxi skirts in earthy prints are a great way of adding a bit of boho to your wardrobe. 
• If accessories are your thing, then you can actually turn just a tshirt and denims outfit into a full fledged boho outfit. All you need to do is add accessories. Yes, if you love two statement necklaces, wear them together. For instance, in this outfit, I decided to wear my floral necklace as a headband....which brings me right into my next point.
• Pay attention to the hair, but then don't really fuss to make it perfect. A messy bun, braids held back with scarves, or scarves braided in a simply hairstyle...all of this is perfectly boho and great ways to turn a simply look into a bohemian goddess look! No really, think headbands, messy braids or simple beach waves. 
• Chunky is better. If you're confused about accessories, then follow this simple mantra and get instant boho vibes added to any outfit. 
• Finally, be yourself. Bohemian fashion is all about expressing your own personal style. If you like wearing feathers, wear feathers in your hair. Honestly, its all about being an individual who celebrates their free spirit!

A few weeks ago, I happened to find myself in our very own Capital City (Delhi for all the non-Indians) and in the few hours that I was in the city, I had to do a spot of street shopping. I managed to find Janpath while roaming around (no, I wasn't consciously trying to find it but rather just chanced upon it) and I got myself some really beautiful afghan jhumkas. These are great for wearing as statement pieces with ethnic outfits or as an interesting headgear with your more boho outfits! As I grow up and spend more time taking on adult-like responsibilities, I realised that I haven't really ever grown up. Sure, I can be responsible but its often heard misconception that growing up and being responsible go hand in hand. I never learnt to swap out my flowers for tiaras. I never learnt to make a formal hairstyle out of the mess that my hair always is. I never learnt that wearing red was a taboo when you were a working professional in the corporate world. I never learnt that letting your inner diva out is frowned upon when you're stuck in the world of stuffy suits with stuffier outlooks to life. I never learn't much...






I did however, learn to play in the puddles on the street wearing my bright rain boots. I learnt to wear my Star Wars dress to work with a blazer because blazers make everything look professional. I learnt that being a geek was always me but then I didn't need to show it to the world. I learnt the hard way that people judged you on the way you look even before they've said a word to you. I learnt soon not to care about such people. I think growing up makes you realise that you need to be free. Freedom is not travelling when you fancy it, although that could be your definition of it. Freedom is a state of mind. I may conform to the standards set by society but then I will not give up my individuality. I will wear my feathers if I want to, I will wear my metal tiara because its still got flowers that make me smile. I will wear my five rings to work and not care if you stare. That's who I grew up to be. A gypsy soul stuck in the confines of the modern world.
